The decompression zone is the first few metres inside the entrance of a retail store. It is the space where customers adjust to the change in environment before they properly start engaging with products, signage, or promotional messages.

In simple terms, just because a customer has walked through the door does not mean they are ready to notice everything straight away.

That is why the entrance should not be overloaded with important displays or key messages. If the space feels too cluttered or crowded, customers can move through it without really taking anything in. A cleaner, more open entry helps people settle into the store and move more naturally into the main shopping area.

Retailers also often plan around the fact that many customers naturally turn right once they enter, so the area just beyond the decompression zone can be a much stronger position for featured displays.

A store needs to look good, but it also needs to feel easy to walk into and easy to shop. Getting the entrance right can help set up the rest of the customer journey from the moment someone walks through the door.
