Do You Have A Cafe Renovation or Fitout Project We Can Help With?

Opening A New Cafe Or Renovating An Existing One In Brisbane

Opening a cafe is a big thing, there are so many little decisions that need to come together properly, from the way the counter works, to where people line up, to how the space feels when someone walks in for the first time.

At Brisbane’s RJR Shopfitting, we help cafe owners create spaces that are practical, welcoming, and implemented with the understanding that a cafe fitout needs to look good, but it also needs to work. Your staff need to be able to move easily with proper workflows, customers need to understand where to order and wait without blocking the door. The space needs to work on the day to day while still feeling like it belongs to your brand.

We’re not limited to new cafe fitouts we can also assist with renovations and existing hospitality spaces across Brisbane where spaces need an update but done on tight timeframes. Some of our clients will come to us with plans already drawn up while others are still working through what they need and how it all will work together. Whatever your point in the journey we can help bring the project together with custom joinery, counters, finishes, trade coordination, and project management.

We’re not just shopfitters, our inhouse team of cabinet makers can create bespoke pieces for your space, the ability to go custom makes a big difference because not every space or brand is the same.

The main goal is to create a cafe that feels right, works properly, and is ready for trade.

Opening A New Cafe Location

When you are opening a new cafe it is very easy to focus on the look of the space first, which of course, this matters but the flow of the cafe is just as important.

Where do people order? Where do they wait? Can staff move around each other during a busy morning rush? Is there enough storage? Does the counter give you the right amount of display space? Are the finishes going to stand up to daily use?

These are the sorts of things we like to work through early, because they affect how the cafe will feel and function every day.

RJR Shopfitting can help with the full fitout process, from the early planning stages through to custom counters, joinery, finishes, services, project managing trades and installation. We understand that opening dates matter, by the time the fitout is underway, you may already have staff organised, signage booked, suppliers ready, and marketing planned.

So it is not just about building something nice. It is about getting the space finished properly, on time, so you can open the doors and start trading.

Cafe Renovations

Existing cafes don’t always need to be completely stripped out, on occasion they just needs a renovation or refurb, which can mean things like updating the counter and joinery, adding better displays or fixtures, and updating things that are broken. It can also mean making the layout work better for staff and customers so that your queue line doesn’t run by the front door.

A good cafe renovation should still respect what is already working, if your regular customers love the feel of the cafe, you may not want to lose that completely. We can help you look at the space and work out what is worth keeping, what needs to be replaced, and where the biggest improvement can be made as with cafes, even small changes to layout and presentation can make a big difference to the way people use the space.

Taking Over An Existing Cafe Location

Taking over an existing cafe location can be a really smart way to get started, however, the fitout will more often than not need a renovation or complete de-fit, make-good and fitout to match your brand and the way you want your customers to experience your business.

The old layout and finishes might not suit the way you want to operate. The counter might be in the wrong spot, the finishes may feel dated, the storage might not work, or the whole space might still feel too much like the previous business.

This is where a careful refit can really help.

RJR Shopfitting can look at the existing tenancy and help you decide what can stay and what needs to change as sometimes there are parts of the fitout that can be reused or worked around, which can help save time and cost while other parts may need to be stripped out and started again.

The aim is to make the cafe feel like your brand with its own experience, without doing unnecessary work where it is not needed.

Retail Fitouts Brisbane QLD

Cafe Fitouts In Shopping Centres

Cafe fitouts in shopping centres need a lot of coordination. It is not just the fitout itself. There are centre requirements, access times, public safety rules, noise restrictions, services, trade scheduling, and often a very firm opening date.

That is where experience matters.

RJR Shopfitting has worked in busy retail environments across Brisbane for over 22 years, including shopping centres and high-profile locations. We understand that these projects need to be planned properly, because there are usually more people involved and more conditions to work around.

For cafe owners, that means you have a team that can work with centre management, coordinate the trades, manage the program, and keep the project moving. The goal is always to get the space finished properly and ready for opening, without making the process harder than it needs to be.

Custom Counters, Joinery And Display Areas

The counter is one of the most important parts of a cafe. It is often the first thing customers notice, but it is also one of the hardest working areas in the whole space.

It needs to look right, but it also needs to handle orders, payments, coffee, food display, staff movement, storage, and cleaning. If the counter is not thought through properly, the whole cafe can feel harder to run.

Because RJR Shopfitting also have a custom cabinet making facility, we can create custom joinery to suit your space, this might include front counters, display shelving, wall features, storage, inbuilt seating, or feature pieces that help give the cafe its own personality.

The benefit of custom joinery is that it can be made for the way you envisioned the space to actually work, rather than shoeboxing you into an off the shelf option.

Designed To Look Good And Work Hard

A cafe is a busy space, the finishes need to look good, but they also need to handle daily use. The joinery needs to be quality materials, well made and the layout needs to make sense. The lighting needs to suit the mood of the space but also be functional for staff.

It is that balance between brand, appearance and practicality that makes a fitout work.

We like to think about how the space will be used once the cafe is open. How it feels when someone walks in. How easy it is for staff to serve customers. How the display areas present food and drinks. How the materials will wear over time.

A good cafe fitout should not just look good on day one. It should keep working for the business after the opening excitement has settled.

Fitout Example: The Way Of Tea

A good cafe or tea house fitout needs to be more than a counter, some seating and a few nice finishes.

The space needs to have a clear idea behind it. It should feel considered when customers walk in, not like a standard tenancy that has simply been filled with fixtures.

A great example of this is RJR Shopfitting’s work on The Way of Tea – Tea Experience and Office Fitout.

A lot of research and thought went into the making of this project, with the design created to reflect the tradition and ritual of a tea ceremony. The washbasin was included for the ritual of washing hands before the ceremony. The bell was used as a symbol of the traditional call to ceremony. The Tokonoma display area allowed for flowers and artistic items to be displayed as part of the experience.

It was the sort of project where the details really mattered.

A variety of materials were used throughout the fitout, including sheet metal reveals and trims, recessed copper panels with a detailed pattern grooved into the back, solid timber and architectural fittings. These were not off-the-shelf pieces. They were detailed joinery items that needed to be manufactured properly, with a very high level of accuracy.

For cafe owners, this is a good example of the type of thinking RJR Shopfitting can bring to a hospitality space.

It is not just about filling a tenancy with counters and shelves. It is about understanding the concept, working through the detail, and creating a space that reflects the brand, feels memorable to customers, and still functions properly as a working cafe or tea house.
